Rayna's Story

"Dust yourself off and try again" - that's the motto this tenacious Tiny Light follows every day. Rayna has the innate ability to make everyone happy and there are always lots of smiles when people meet her. Dancing, music and toys bring her joy and elicit her infectious laughter.

Rayna was two years old when she was diagnosed with Rett syndrome - a disorder of the nervous system that leads to developmental reversals. Symptoms include seizures, limited purposeful hand movement, limited mobility and little or no speech. Parents Sukhi and Cort had many moments of despair when coming to terms with their youngest daughter's diagnosis. "Every parent wants what's best for their child and knowing that there is nothing you can do to fix this for her is very difficult."

Rayna's older sister Aaliya is her biggest champion. She is always there to help out with lots of love and support. Sometimes it seems as if the two girls can read each other's minds. For the entire family, Rayna has been an inspiration and she's taught them to live in the moment.

The future is uncertain for Rayna, but this Tiny Light does not let her disorder define who she is and what she does. All she wants and needs is the encouragement and love to persevere. "Our hopes and dreams are for her to be the best Rayna she can be. We will be there every step of the way to help her along. She is the greatest gift we could have received."
