Memories Captured by Charmaine Poulin Photography

Meet Tiny Lights Brooklyn and Natasha, also known as “Bagee” and “Beans.”  Even though they are twins, they have very distinct personalities. Brooklyn is very social and loves to sing, dance, and have tea parties. She is full of life and curious about everything. Natasha is the quieter one who sits back and observes her environment. She has an incredible ability to draw people in and warm their hearts. She loves being held, explore new things, and be tickled.

Brooklyn and Natasha were born at 28 weeks gestation with severe complications due to twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). Brooklyn weighed only 1lb 9oz and was in renal failure. She is currently at stage 11 chronic kidney disease, which is progressive and incurable. Natasha was only 1lb 5oz and very fragile. She was immediately hooked up to a breathing machine and testing revealed that she suffered brain damage (polymicrogyria in her occipital, frontal, and parietal brain lobes resulting in microcephaly) and would face a lot of challenges in her future. Her diagnoses include:  retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), pulmonary heart valve stenosis/dysplasia, chronic lung disease, quadriplegic dyskinetic cerebral palsy (which was diagnosed at age 2) and a global development delay. She is G-tube fed and is unable to walk and communicate.

Though daily life can be a struggle, watching the girls achieve new milestones is an incredible feeling for parents Charlene and Michael. Their difficulties and challenges have brought their family closer together, and for this, they are grateful. The journey so far has been an emotional one but there is so much hope. “Slowly, now that the girls are getting older, the feelings of grief are leaving and filling those spots are feelings of joy and happiness.”
