Meet Sophia. This 5-year-old Tiny Light loves Dora and Cat in The Hat. While she is often misunderstood, her parents describe her as the most loving and affectionate child that they know.
Sophia was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder when she was three years old. Her parents were heartbroken. They were overcome with worry for her future and concerned about the availability of support for families with children that have Autism. Sophia’s parents knew that early intervention was the key to helping kids like Sophia overcome their disorder. This has been a huge struggle, as most of the intervention required is not supported and they have had to pay for out of pocket. A huge added stress to an already difficult situation.
Sophia’s parents find it hard to watch people that don’t understand Sophia. It is heartbreaking as a parent to watch your child be excluded. “We’ve had to endure more ignorant comments than I care to recall.”
Sophia’s parents find optimism in Sophia. She was diagnosed as ‘non-verbal’ yet they now listen as she sings her favorite songs, says her ABC’s, and says, “I love you.” They refer to these transformations as little miracles. While they worry about who will help her when they are no longer here to take care of her, Sophia’s parents are constantly reassured each and every time they see her learn something new. Seeing her do things that other kids her age are doing gives them hope.  She has taught her family the true meaning of unconditional love.
Since this photo session, Sophia’s brother Carrson has also been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
