Kaelyn's Story

Monday, May 2, 2011
Meet Kaelyn. In many ways Kaelyn is just like every other two–year-old. She loves to play house, dance, play with stickers, throw a ball around, and go for walks. Her favorite thing, when coming home from the hospital, is playing with her cousin, Lincoln.

She is different from other two-year-olds too. About six months ago, Kaelyn was diagnosed with a rhabdomyosarcoma tumour (cancer) in her bladder. She had been sick for about two months before her diagnosis.

Upon her diagnosis, her mother Tara felt horrified and terrified. She wanted to hold Kaelyn and never let her go.
Tara feels helpless when she sees Kaelyn in pain, knowing there isn’t anything she can do to make it better.

Tara is amazed by the support she has received from total strangers, and very grateful for the support from her friends and family, which help her get through the unimaginable. She is forever grateful to the doctors and nurses and all they do.

Kaelyn is amazing. Nothing can stop this child. Even after being held down for procedures, she jumps up and continues to play. She just moves past whatever she doesn’t like! She can even give herself her own medicine!

When asked about what advice she would give to parents like herself, Tara said, “I don’t know if there are any words that can make it any easier. As far as advice goes, I would tell them to try to take breaks. Go for a walk, anything that will give them a breather.”

Someone told Tara that it will get worse before it gets better, but it WILL get better. Tara thinks of that every time Kaelyn is having a rough day or a tough time with treatments.

Like every mother Tara has fears, but her fears are unlike those of most mothers. Her biggest fear is that Kaelyn won’t make it. She fears that one day Kaelyn will relapse and her doctor will say there isn’t anything more that they can do. She just tries to stay focused on the good days and take things one day at a time.

She hopes that she is able to see her daughter live a long and happy life. She hopes that Kaelyn will take her experience and learn and grow from it.
